The Poway Library will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early on Saturday as it hosts a day of music and dance featuring the Raggle Taggle Band and dancers from the Rose Academy of Carmel Mountain Ranch.
The free event will take place from 1-2 p.m. this Saturday (March 13) at the library, 13137 Poway Road.
Mike Stewart, who created the Raggle Taggle Band with his wife, Jane, about 25 years ago, said the band will feature a fiddler and woodwind player, creating music that gives audiences — and the Rose Academy dancers — a good beat to dance to.
Some of the music, which includes Celtic, Scottish, English, Welsh and Irish jigs and reels, is over 400 years old, Stewart said.
“The songs have been around a long time because of their structure, which have almost a skipping beat,” Stewart said. “It’s a kind of optimistic sound, and a lot of the songs are happy.”
The family-friendly performance will also give people of all ages the opportunity to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, he added, noting that many of the events often associated with the holiday are for the adults.
In fact, he said, the performance will focus on giving a broad overview of the Celtic tradition and ignore the actual St. Patrick’s Day holiday, which takes place on Wednesday, March 17.
Stewart said that one of the goals of the Raggle Taggle Band is to educate.
Stewart, who used to teach elementary school and was a school librarian, said the band has always performed for children. He added that the band often performs with Irish dance troupes from throughout the county, adding another element to the educational aspect of the show — and its educational aspect.
“We always have an edutainment feeling,” Stewart said. “We like to teach kids about the reality of things ... and stress the importance of reading.”
In addition to Mike and Jean Stewart, the Raggle Taggle Band includes vocalist, dancer and percussionist Jeanne Reith; Paul Castellanos on violin, mandolin, guitar banjo and bass; Adrienne Nims on woodwinds; Floyd Fronius on violin and Brenda K. on violin and bass.
The band also performs with its members dressed as pirates, troubadours, jugglers and renaissance jesters.
