MUSIC

The RB Swingtet resumes their free monthly concerts the second Tuesday of the month from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Rancho Bernardo Library, 17110 Bernardo Center Drive. Donations for children’s programs at the library are welcomed.


The San Diego Children’s Choir now has a location in Rancho Bernardo. Auditions are before the first rehearsals, which is Tuesday, Sept. 14 at their Rancho Bernardo location, 16777 Bernardo Center Drive, Suite E4.

Chris Klich is the guest musician when the Sandy Devito Trio plays jazz 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Rancho Bernardo Courtyard by Marriott. Klich is a San Diego multi-nominated Jazz Musician of the Year candidate and plays both reed and brass instruments. The Courtyard by Marriott is at 11611 Bernardo Plaza Court. Mac Frampton, world-renowned pianist, performs at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 at Grace Point Church, 13340 Hayford Way, Carmel Valley, for a benefit concert. The RB Chorale is looking for new members as they kickoff their Christmas season with “Deck the Halls.” Chorale membership will be open to new members until Oct. 5 with the first rehearsal on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at Westwood Elementary School, 17449 Matinal Road, Rancho Bernardo.

New members should arrive at 7 p.m. to meet the recruitment committee and/or to complete registration. No auditions are required and there are openings for sopranos, altos, and especially tenors and basses.

The musical excitement and swirling regalia of Native Americans come to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts for the seventh year at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. The 2010 Circle of Harmony Native American Benefit Concert will include two time Grammy winner Robert Mirabal, a multitalented instrumentalist who plays percussion, keyboards, ocarina, didgeridoo, and Native American flute, award-winning classical guitarist and Best Instrumental Recording Grammy winner Gabriel Ayala, fluteman Danny Bigay, storyteller Kay LittleJohn, world champion hoop dancer Lowery Begay, flutist and percussionist Mac Lopez, and 20 world-class Native American dancers.

The Birch Aquarium concludes its Green Flash Concert Series lineup with the Tommy Castro Band on Sept. 15. The series, which is for 21 and older, combines live music with panoramic views of the ocean. Prices are $35 with RSVP, $40 at the door. For reservations, call 858-534-4109.

The Church at Rancho Bernardo’s Senior Choir, Joyful Praise, is accepting new members. DANCE

Registration for San Diego Civic Dance Arts’ fall semester will occur Sept. 20-26 at the class location and time with the instructor.

Classes are taught at recreation centers throughout the city, including Carmel Mountain Ranch/Sabre Springs (Sept. 20), Rancho Penasquitos (Sept. 23 at Hilltop and Sept. 24 at Canyonside) and Rancho Bernardo (Sept. 25).

The Wranglers Square Dance Club will open classes Sept. 15 for first-time dancers who want to learn basic square dance calls and enjoy the many mental and physical benefits of this type of dancing. No experience is necessary, attire is casual, and all ages 11 and up are welcome, families, couples, singles, and groups of friends.

Classes will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at Rolling Hills Elementary School, 15255 Penasquitos Drive in Rancho Penasquitos. The first class is free, classes that follow are $32 per person per eight-week session. Ages 17 and under are half-price.

THEATER

“Social Security,” a sophisticated comedy, opens Sept. 11 and runs through Oct. 9 at the Scripps Ranch Theatre. North Coast Repertory Theatre presents “Becky’s New Car” by Steven Dietz, directed by nationally recognized actor/director David Ellenstein through Sept. 26. Becky is a 40-something who lives a fairly ordinary life until one day an exciting twist of fate changes everything.

The Welk Resorts Theatre presents the Broadway comedy “The Full Monty” starring Timothy Quinlan (“Footloose” and “Jersey Boys”), and Cissy King (of the Cissy and Bobby duo). The Rancho Bernardo Art Association presents its first Art Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 featuring a tour of the home studios of over 15 award-winning Rancho Bernardo artists. MUSEUMS


The San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts currently hosts the following exhibitions:
Taking Aim, Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash through Sept. 26. The exhibition spans more than fifty years of music-making as seen through the eyes of 40 legendary photographers and expresses Graham’s view on the evolution of rock ‘n’ roll music.

Seeing Beauty through Jan. 23. The exhibition is meant to engage viewers to challenge, redefine, or confirm their understanding of what beauty is, and what factors contribute to their aesthetic evaluation.

In Light - Selections from the Permanent Collection through Jan. 23. The exhibition includes iconic names, such as Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, and introduces viewers to the compelling works by other leaders of the medium.


An exhibit of tequila bottles is on display at the Mingei International Museum. A mini-exhibition consisting of more than 60 bottles from the collection of El Agave, the award-winning Mexican nouvelle cuisine restaurant and tequileria in Old Town San Diego, the exhibition, which complements ¡VIVA MÉXICO! — Heroes and Artisans, will be on view until Jan. 2. Grouped together by design, shape and label design, the intriguing bottles in the exhibition are made from ceramic and glass.

“TEQUILA!,” a lecture in Spanish with English translation, will be presented at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, followed by a reception featuring tequila tasting, refreshments and mariachis, organized in conjunction with the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. Walk in the footpath of Poway’s first residents every Saturday morning at Poway’s Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center. Savor the smell of blooming native plants that Kumeyaay people smelled each spring for more than 2,000 years. Learn about the past from the San Diego History Center, 1649 El Prado, Balboa Park. The organization is dedicated to preserving San Diego’s history through education and preservation.


The San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park is currently offering the following exhibitions:

All That Glitters: The Splendor and Science of Gems and Minerals, an ongoing exhibit showing how the Earth produces dazzling gemstones and precious metals, even right here in San Diego County. It features a stunning selection of spectacular natural mineral crystals, exquisite jewelry, and works of art.

Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries, using a combination of recent major fossil finds, computer simulations, and provocative life-size models, the exhibit presents the most up-to-date look at how scientists are reinterpreting many of the mysteries of dinosaurs: what they looked like, how they behaved, and how they moved, as well as the complex and hotly debated theories of why — or even whether — they became extinct. On display until Sept. 6.

Water: A California Story demonstrates through photos, maps, video, and hands-on activities, current, local issues on land and in the ocean. Examine the infrastructure of the regional water system, and discover how we import the majority of our water and the costs associated with this practice. The exhibit also looks at effects of a changing climate on our region’s water supply and reveals how Southern Californians can help protect water for future generations. Natural history specimens and live animals will serve as reminders that the natural environment and its inhabitants are also legitimate users of water resources.

The Barona Cultural Center & Museum is now open noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The museum is closed Sunday and Monday to focus on creating new exhibits and providing community outreach. The museum houses more than 3,000 artifacts, photographic displays and archives. The San Diego Museum of Art presents the exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec’s Paris: Selections from the Baldwin M. Baldwin Collection. The show includes nearly 100 avant-garde works illustrating Paris by night - cabarets, banquets, brothels and the famed Moulin Rouge. Touluose-Lautrec is best known as a colorful chronicler of the belle époque and inventor of the enduring myth of Montmartre. Furnishing saucy and satirical designs for posters and other commercial purposes, the artist also distinguished himself as a daring print-maker pioneering master of the modern lithographic process.


LOCAL MARKETS


The Del Sur Farmers Market & Family Festival is 3 to 7 p.m. every Thursday at the corner of Camino del Sur and Lone Quail Road, next to 4S Ranch. Shop for certified and organic produce, cut flowers, and boutique and houseware items and let the kids play in the fun zone. Free. Proceeds benefit the Del Sur Elementary School Educational Foundation.


The Scripps Ranch Farmers Market & Art Festival is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday. They have returned to their old location, 10380 Spring Canyon Road, the site of the old E.B. Scripps Elementary School. For more information, visit www.srfm.org.


The Rancho Bernardo Business Association Farmers Market is open every Tuesday from 3-7 p.m. at the entrance to Rancho Bernardo’s Webb Park on Bernardo Center Drive. Includes 40-plus vendors providing fresh vegetables, hot food, flowers, crafts, household items and more.


Poway Farmers Market is 8 to 11:30 a.m. every Saturday next to Old Poway Park, at Midland Road and Temple Street. SPECIAL EVENTS


Fleet Week Big Bay Family Festival is debuting as part of Fleet Week, San Diego’s week-long celebration honoring the men and women of the military.

The free family event is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 and Sunday, Sept. 19 at the B Street Cruise Terminal on San Diego Bay.

The community is invited to climb aboard U.S. Navy ships and explore other military displays and chat with Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. Educational and informative exhibits will be on display inside the terminal.
