Christopher Carl Hass, 57, was arrested at his Hada Drive home Feb. 11, according to San Diego police.

Deputy District Attorney Wendy Patrick said the arrest followed a “distinctive crime spree’’ that lasted two and a half years.

A search of Hass’ car turned up “voluminous’’ amounts of information, including the victims’ names, telephone numbers and addresses, Patrick said.

The prosecutor told Judge David Szumowski that Hass would call the women or send threatening mail, telling them to wear certain articles of clothing, hoop earrings and open-toed shoes, and have them say or do things.

“If they didn’t comply, he threatened to rape them, strangle them with pantyhose or worse,’’ Patrick told the judge.

His letters and phone calls included the phrase “don’t mess with me, I’m a dangerous sicko,’’ she said.

Hass was charged with seven counts of making criminal threats, three counts of stalking and two misdemeanor counts of harassing telephone calls.

Defense attorney John Stathis told the judge that Hass, who is married and has a daughter, “vehemently denies the charges.’’

The judge set bail at $500,000 and scheduled a bail review for next Tuesday.

Besides news reporters, the alleged victims included school teachers, an office manager and a real estate agent. One of the alleged offenses occurred in Temecula, the eight others in San Diego County.

San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen said the communications included “heavy sexual content’’ and became more ‘severe’’ as time went by.

Hass was identified by fingerprints found on some of the threatening letters, Hassen said.

Patrick said DNA was also used to identify the defendant. She was unable to confirm reports that he had two prior arrests for similar offenses in other states.

Hass faces nine years in prison if convicted, according to the prosecutor.
