The seasons of the Rancho Bernardo boys basketball team and the Poway High girls basketball team concluded on Tuesday, as the teams lost their first round games of the 2010 CIF State Basketball Championships.
In the Division V Southern California bracket, 4S Ranch’s Maranatha Christian School is in Visalia today (Thursday) for a second-round game slated to take place at 7 p.m. against third-seeded Center Valley Christian.
The state action kicked off earlier this week, three days after the conclusion of the section finals, which saw the Bronco boys basketball team capture the schools second-ever San Diego CIF title (see story below) and Poway’s top-seeded Lady Titans lose to San Diego High School.
Maranatha Christian was the section’s runner-up in Division V for the third straight year.
The Rancho Bernardo team concluded its season with a record of 22-12 after falling 56-40 to Moreno Valley’s Rancho Verde at home. RB was the eighth seed, Rancho Verde (who improved to 27-4 with the win) the ninth.
While the game remained close in the first and second quarters (Rancho Verde led 22-19 at the half) it was obvious that the Broncos’ accuracy at the net was not what it had been at the end of the season, which led the Broncos to win 10 of their last 11 games.
“We had to shoot well in order to be in the game, we didn’t hit our normal shots, but it’s not because we didn’t hit them, they just put the pressure on us,” Coach Jim Choe said after the game.
He added that the visiting team hit their offense hard on the screen, stopping them from executing pick and rolls and some other of their preferred offensive weapons. Choe said he wouldn’t be surprised if the team had figured out their passing patterns, since there was at least two times that Rancho Verde defenders jumped out in the passing lanes and took the ball before the Broncos threw it.
“They knew who our shooters were,” Choe said. “Hats off to the coach for doing a good job on scouting us.”
Rancho Verde Coach Travis Showalter said his team did watch video of the Broncos to prepare for the match in an effort to stop Rancho Bernardo from scoring.
“We’re not a great offensive team,” Showalter said. “We have to keep our opponents to a certain score in order to be successful.”
The Broncos had a hard time stopping senior guard Kyle Fuller, who is headed to Vanderbilt. Fuller scored 28 points.
POWAY ELIMINATED
For the Poway girls basketball season, the end of the road took place on the road after the team lost 68-55 to fourth-seeded Santiago High School in Corona.
Poway, which ended its season with a 27-5 record, was forced to travel in the first round after falling 68-56 to San Diego High School in the San Diego Section CIF finals on Saturday.
San Diego High School got the tournament’s No. 8 seed (Poway was seeded 13th) and defeated Fullerton’s Troy High School in their first round game. They are to square off against second-seeded Clovis tonight.
Coach Jay Trousdale said his team played well against Santiago, a team that was ranked 22nd in the nation according to the high school sports Web site maxpreps.com.
“I think our girls competed very well against them,” Trousdale said in a phone interview following the loss.
Junior Katie Kuklok had 20 points during the game and Callie Rhoads had 11, said Trousdale, who said the team had to play without senior Katie Holiday for most of the game “because of foul trouble for questionable touch fouls.”
Trousdale said he is happy with what the team accomplished this season.
“We were disappointed about Saturday’s outcome,” Trousdale said. “But the girls had a lot of success. Sometimes the ball is not going to bounce your way. I’m very proud of the girls.”
MARANATHA WINS
After failing to bring home the Division V CIF section title after falling 79-57 to Foothills Christian, the Maranatha Christian boys basketball team bounced back with a 57-52 win against Tarbut V’Torah of Irvine.
Junior Chen Cai had 21 points for Maranatha, as well as 15 rebounds and five blocks. He was followed by senior David Porter, who scored 15 points and 11 assists.
The Eagles will play Visalia tonight (an update will be posted on our Web site.
